b.1995 Sophie Castle is a British artist based in Falmouth, Cornwall. Sophie’s practice is an exploration of personal, female identity and sexual empowerment through the use of the historical motif, the nude. Her work aims to tackle the subservient and fragile portrayal of the female nude, allowing a modern view of what the nude can denote. Her work ranges from portraying herself in the classical nude methodology as well as within domestic settings or hyper sexualised positions. Sophie’s work can portray an intimate narrative, it is both welcoming yet intrusive, her honesty renders her vulnerable yet her depiction is confident and confronting. In recent years her work has harnessed the retelling of Greek Mythology to further her investigation of female rage, sexuality and the hereditary expectations of women. The issue of the embodied female as both an artistic subject and object are addressed by commanding self-representations and mythological retellings.
